Latest Update was on 15th November 2010 Visitors to this website now total WSJ Discount Coupon Website by Geoff Kirby My wife bought an ex-demonstrator Skoda Octavia 1.6 Petrol in February 2006 from Loders Skoda (Yeovil) - please click here for their website. I was told in October 2010 that her car was probably assembled in Solomonovo, a village with a population of just over 1,000 in the Zakarpattia Oblast region of the Ukraine - I wonder if that contributed to the appalling problems described below? Skoda cars are also assembled in India , Bosnia and Herzegovina , China , Russia and Kazakhstan (the fictional home of Borat - click here ) Her car had been first registered in May 2005 and had about 5,000 miles on the clock when purchased. Below are the problems experienced so far - new ones will be added as they arise. Please click where shown to read that particular horror story. CLICK Crank Angle Sensor fails CLICK O2 (Lambda) Sensor fails - THE Supply of Goods and Services Act (1982) GETS MY WIFE A FREE REPAIR AND USE OF A COURTESY CAR! CLICK ARE THE SKODA WARRANTY CONDITIONS LEGAL? When my wife took delivery of her Skoda Octavia it had about 30 months left on the manufacturer's warranty. This was just as well in view of the horrific succession of faults (listed above) that occurred in those 30 months. The warranty printed in the Skoda's manual states "A requirement for warranty repairs free of charge is that the Service Inspections ... and repairs during the warranty period have been carried out by an authorized Skoda Dealer." In November 2010 the online Skoda Warranty Conditions (please click here ) state "In the event of a vehicle becoming defective due to faulty manufacture or material, it must be promptly returned to an appointed Skoda Retailer or Authorised Repairer where it will be repaired free of charge." Notice that the 2010 online warranty refers to "...Authorised Repairer" whereas the 2005 driver's manual refers to "...authorized Skoda Dealer." However, both forms of words strongly suggest that a Skoda Dealership must be used and that is the way Skoda owners would undoubtedly read those words - as, indeed, my wife and I did. As a result my wife kept driving to Loders Skoda in Yeovil - a round trip of sixty miles - every time the car broke down. In total she and I covered nearly one thousand miles between us getting her and her terrible Octavia to Yeovil and back. On one occasion it broke down just two miles from Loders VW in Dorchester but this garage insisted it be transported to Loders Skoda in Yeovil even though Skoda and VW used many compatible parts and the two garages are part of the same Loders Group! So, what does " Authorised Repairer" mean to a Skoda owner other than that the car must be returned to a Skoda main dealership when under warranty! In October 2010 I investigated this problem using the excellent Consumer Direct helpline (08454 04 05 06). I was informed by a very helpful lady (Kate) that under the Block Exemptions Regulations 1400/2002 (click here to learn more) and the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Act (1999) (click here for details) car owners are, within certain conditions, allowed to have their vehicles serviced and repaired anywhere without invalidating the manufacturer's warranty as long as the garage is competent and uses parts which are suitable. The purpose of these laws was to open up the car repairing market and prevent the main dealership franchises holding a monopoly grip over warranty repairs. So, if your car breaks down under warranty and you are told it has to be repaired at a main dealership garage - quote the above law and press the dealership to specify a nearer, cheaper and non-franchised repairer. It's your right in law. THE AWFUL USER MANUAL Our first concern on getting the car was to find that the page numbers in the index of the User Manual were all wrong! OK - a trivial matter perhaps but a sign of the slapdash attitude that was to plague us with our Skoda car. Later we wondered whether the person who showed such a casual attitude to editorial accuracy was on the production line when our car went past in the Ukrainian factory! THE SILENT RADIO Scarcely had my wife started to use the car than the radio stopped working and the car had to be returned for the warranty repair. It had 6,011 miles on the clock. THE DETACHABLE GEAR LEVER Having got the radio working again, I was driving the car through busy Weymouth streets when the gear stick came out in my hand. Now that was scary - I mean, really scary! Luckily I didn’t panic and managed to wriggle the gear lever back into a slot and got the car home driving v...e...r...y s...l...o...w...l...y. So, it was another day off work for my wife and a slow worrying trip to Yeovil and back to be told that a retaining pin had been left out on the assembly line. What else has been left out at the factory? At this point this car could have been rejected as 'not fit for purpose' (click here for guidance on consumer law) but my wife decided to press on. In fact, it appears that items can be rejected up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) and purchasers may successfully demand damages - so this is still an option. ANYONE FOR INEDIBLE MAYONNAISE? The next problem, which was discovered soon after taking delivery of the car at around 5,000 miles, was a mass of mayonnaise-like muck, containing a lot of water droplets, that thickly coated the inside of the oil filler cap. A fter two services at Loders Skoda, Yeovil Three months after a service at Loders VW, Dorchester The oil cap on my Micra - perfectly clean - as always. My immediate thought was that water was seeping into the engine - possibly from a leaking head gasket. A call to the main dealer only slightly reassured me when I was told that this was normal for some Skoda models. Really? This lasted until the car was given an annual service in May 2008. The service was carried out by Loders VW (Dorchester) and not as previous services at Loders Skoda (Yeovil). The thick revolting muck disappeared as seen above right. So, why did oil changes at Loders Skoda (Yeovil) produce thick wet gunge in the top of the engine but an oil change at Loders VW (Dorchester) not produce this muck? A CATASTROPHIC WATER PUMP LEAK We move on to March 2007 and with the car showing just under 16,000 miles on the clock. My wife called me on her way home from work to say that the water temperature warning light was flashing. I suggested she drive slowly to the Loders VW (Dorchester) dealer. They diagnosed that the water pump was leaking rapidly so the car was taken to Loders Skoda (Yeovil) by the AA on a breakdown truck. Once again it is fair to ask why this repair could not have been done at Loders VW (Dorchester) which is so much closer to home? The water pump, cambelt and tensioner were replaced under warranty. Another day off work for my wife and me to each drive independently the sixty mile round trip to get the car back to Weymouth. CENTRAL LOCKING...UNLOCKING...LOCKING...UNLOCKING...LOCKING... At about 18,000 miles the central locking system starting randomly locking and unlocking whilst the car was in motion or when we were opening and closing doors. Sometimes my wife or I would be driving along when three doors would lock. Half an hour or so later they would unlock. This was disconcerting and distracting to the driver. There was always the fear that all doors would self lock and we would be trapped in the car in the event of an accident. Shutting the front passenger door frequently caused the other three doors to lock - very irritating when trying to get in or out! On other occasions opening the front passenger door from the inside caused the other three doors to lock. Yet another option was the boot locking when the front passenger door was opened or closed. Yet another day off work and a sixty mile round trip to Yeovil! This time the Loders Skoda (Yeovil) dealership could not find the fault so, for months, we endured doors - and boot - locking and unlocking at random whilst stationary and whilst in motion. THE SQUEAKING SUSPENSION Oh yes, I nearly forgot! The suspension was now squeaking! This was supposedly addressed at the dealer service in March 2008. Although it was claimed that the squeak had been cured - it was still there! DANGEROUS DEFLATION OF A NEW TYRE On Thursday 6th March 2008 the car went in for it's final service before the warranty ran out. A new electronic mechanism was fitted in an attempt to try to stop the door locks randomly locking and unlocking and the squeaking was tracked down to an area near the radiator - but not solved. The front tyres needed replacing so two new tyres were fitted on 13th March and my wife drove home from Yeovil. She noted that the steering characteristic was different but thought this was due to the new tyres. Not the ideal start to a trip to London! I also noticed that the car was still loudly squeaking! The next morning we jumped into the car to drive to London on family business - and found that one of the new tyres was flat! Having changed to the spare we drove to Loders at Dorchester - not best pleased that a new tyre had gone flat after only thirty miles! We were loaned a spare wheel so that we could continue the journey. On taking the car back to Loders at Dorchester to get the wheel, my wife was told that a faulty valve had been fitted by Loders at Yeovil. That was not good news. Had that front tyre suddenly deflated whilst travelling at speed there could have been a fatal accident. Indeed, the tyre had probably dropped to a dangerously low pressure on the drive home from the service. A new valve was fitted by Loders VW (Dorchester) but no offer was made to refit the wheel on the car for us so that was an unwelcome and dirty job for me on arriving home after a long drive back from London. THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY EXPIRES The manufacturer's warranty expired at the end of May 2008. The car got through its first MOT - to our amazement - but yet another day off work and a sixty mile round trip to Yeovil for my wife was made to try to resolve the squeaking suspension which had defeated the dealer previously. This was identified as a loose mounting bolt under the bonnet. A loose mounting bolt! At least the engine didn't fall out so it couldn't have been too dangerous a defect I suppose. All the above major faults so far were covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. That does not, of course, reimburse my wife and I for all the days taken off work and the cost of the many sixty-mile round trips to Yeovil - in many cases I also had to drive to bring her home for repairs taking over a day. Now that the warranty had run out we wondered what horrific repair bills we would be facing if we hung on to this rogue car. The Loders Skoda (Yeovil) dealership have worked hard to resolve the appalling list of problems - not always successfully on the first attempt. The car is comfortable, nice to drive (when working!) quiet and economical delivering 43 mpg on long 'A road' journeys, 39 mpg on motorways and 33 mpg on urban trips. This fuel economy is offset by a certain flat spot during acceleration which can be unnerving when overtaking. I personally find the gear change insensitive and often find myself in third gear when expecting to pull away in first. The gear change does not have the firm and unambiguous feel that I like with my old Micra. Not everyone thinks Skodas are the best thing since sliced bread. For example, click here to read the experiences of one Octavia owner ( "My car has been a disaster..." ) - and there are many similar stories on the Internet. Of all the online Skoda horror stories click here for the one that must beat them all! What a pile of junk! R AIN LEAKING INTO THE BOOT A wet patch was found sometimes found in the boot after rain. I failed to find out where this was getting in despite me being shut in the boot whilst my wife drenched the boot with a hosepipe. I can only think that the water drops in when the boot lid is opened whilst raining and there is a wind blowing. This wet has been collecting in a corner which we rarely look into. The boot aperture is huge when the tailgate is fully opened - an otherwise good design feature - but no provision has been made for the rain running off the open rear door staying out of the boot in windy conditions. Either we do not open the boot in rain or we put up with a wet boot carpet. THE TEMPERAMENTAL RADIO In September 2010 the radio intermittently played up. It appeared as though the input signal strength from the aerial would drop to a low level for days at a time. There would be a big increase in background hiss, the radio would keep cutting out totally for a few seconds at a time and the automatic channel selector would scan up and down every few seconds searching for a strong enough signal. On some journeys the radio was fine but we got used to playing CDs instead. THE CRANK ANGLE SENSOR FAILS Also in September 2010 a dashboard 'Engine Management' warning light appeared. This was diagnosed as the crank angle sensor. The sensor was replaced at a cost of £181. I suppose it could have been worse? Well, yes. It did get worse because the same warning light lit up again one month after the previous problem. So, it was back to the repair shop! THE O2 (LAMBDA) SENSOR FAILS In October 2010, just a month after the Crank Angle Sensor has been replaced, the car was back in a repair shop with the Engine Management warning light on again. This time it was the O2 (Lambda) sensor (click here for description) needing replacement. I took the car in for the sensor to be replaced and was quoted a price for the repair. However, I was then told that the repair would cost me about an extra £90 for replacement manifold parts and additional labour charges because the mechanic had been unable to release the old sensor in the manner and timescale specified in the official Skoda Repair Schedule. I was pretty sure this was unenforceable because I had been given a firm quotation for the job and quotations are legally binding unlike estimates which are only for guidance. So - I refused to pay up and took the car home. On calling the Consumer Direct helpline (08454 04 05 06) I was informed by a most helpful young man (Ken) that, under the Supply of Goods and Services Act (1982) , a customer is not obliged to cover any additional cost of damage caused by, or failings on the part of, a repairer in doing work for a customer. When I made a fuss to the repairer quoting the above law the work was carried out wholly free and a courtesy car was provided whilst the repair was carried out. This saved my wife well over £200. So, don't be persuaded to pay over the odds for repairs that go wrong. Any costs incurred over the quoted price because of difficulties encountered by the repairer do not have to paid by the car owner. However, if a repair reveals an unrelated fault that's a fair extra cost. INTRODUCING A GOOD RELIABLE LOW COST CAR My own car is a Nissan Micra which I have owned for 14 years. It has never let me down and has cost less than £300 in repairs and consequent labour charges over all those years. It has a frisky performance which impresses owners of much more expensive and newer cars when I overtake. Now, THAT'S what I call a good car! OK! So it's a Micra - we've all heard the jokes! However I don't wear a hat when I drive, don't pay for petrol by counting out piles of coins from a purse and don't smoke a pipe. Keywords: Skoda
