Choose from six trim levels, including a vRS hot hatch, but our favourite is SE trim with the great 1.4 TSI petrol engine. That may not sound like much in such a big car, but it manages to give an impressive blend of performance and economy. The Octavia is built on the same platform as the previous-generation VW Golf, which helps to account for the fine balance between crisp handling and a comfortable ride. All materials feel high-quality and solid, and the interior shames those of many more expensive models for its fit and finish.Equipment is generally good, although the cheapest versions miss out on key items of safety kit. All models are very spacious, with more rear legroom than most rivals. The exterior styling might look a bit staid, but the Octavia is very capable and comes at a great price to boot. Auto Express Car Reviews Rating: On the road price: £13,225 - £22,970 For : Robust build, simple cabin layout, punchy diesels, handling, compliant ride, huge boot Against : Sudden power delivery of TDI models, notable omissions in spec of lesser cars DrivingThe Octavia's controls are all well-weighted and gearboxes generally have a slick, robust shift. There's a wide range of engines, but smaller 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines can struggle. That's why the TDI diesels prove so popular; the 2.0-litre unit, for instance, has punchy performance and deep reserves of torque. It performs well in-gear, though the power delivery is rather sudden and engine noise is noticeable. An alternative is the 1.8 TSI, and the turbocharged 160bhp unit is a smooth, free-revving gem. Drawing from the Volkswagen Golf's platform, the Octavia handles well. The set-up is soft and there's plenty of compliancy, which gives it a decent ride. Yet the Skoda always remains composed, and body control in corners is good. Roll is contained, grip levels are high and, crucially, the steering is well weighted and communicative. The brakes are effective too - and many Octavias feature ESP stability control as standard. The ride of Sport models can provide a firm edge on some surfaces though, due to the low-profile tyres and 17-inch wheels.MarketplaceThe Octavia has long been commended in Auto Express's New Car Honours, so its ability is without question. If you're looking for a car that falls in the middle ground between the VW Golf and Ford Focus, and the Passat and Mondeo, the Skoda is the main contender. There's an attractive solidity about this car, and the design is clean and well proportioned. Details such as indicator repeaters in the mirrors give it a stylish look, while Sport models add bold bumpers and large alloys. Both five-door hatchback and estate models are available. Trim levels include Classic, Elegance and Avantgarde, plus that Sport variant which is a UK-specific model. Prices are very keen, undercutting the Golf it's based upon by some margin. But equipment levels on some models reflect this and are a bit mean.OwningThe sense of solidity you get with the Octavia isn't just an illusion, as the panel gaps are tight and the doors shut with a reassuring thud. Inside, the simplicity and ergonomic excellence of the interior impresses; it's very easy to get on with. The driving position has a vast range of adjustment, cabin storage is well laid out and the chunky switchgear is easy to use. What's more, rear passengers have plenty of space. Roomy, robust and well designed, the Octavia's interior takes some beating. Both hatchback and estate variants are noted for their exceptionally large boots, too. The estate is bigger, seats up, than a Volvo V70! Variable service intervals reflect other VW Group cars and help stretch pitstops, while insurance ratings are one or two groups above the comparable Golf or Focus - and a little below Passats and Mondeos. Economy is good; our test 2.0 TDI averaged 43.3mpg, while the powerful 1.8 TSI returned just under 30mpg. But the best measure of how Skoda has turned around its fortunes is retained values; some Octavias retain nearly 50% after three years! Chap at work has the vRS in race blue and it does look smart. Exactly the same as a Golf inside and it really shifts too. The power delivery can be brutal, all or nothing, (especially as his has been re-mapped to 210bhp) he also claims the re-map helps him into the mid 50's as regards mpg - I've seen proof of this. For the same money you would be looking at a low spec Audi or a mid spec VW/Seat so in terms of value for money I'd go for the Skoda. The image shouldn't bother you, not unless you have shallow friends who are going to torment you about it, I questioned his choice when he bought it but having been for a drive I can safely say he made the right choice. As mentioned earlier, if its out of your own pocket then I'd go for Audi/VW for residuals, but if its company cash then go for the Skoda. I've had my Octy (one of the first of the CRs) for 2 months now and I've got to say I love it. Coming from a turbo'd petrol A4 I wasn't really sure how this would compare but it's awesome and all the better for being on the Golf platform, it has bags of grip! Really sizewise it's more in competition with the A4 S line than the Golf(and with a much bigger boot than both of them!) and you get things like electronic climate control, 6 disc changer, both of which are extra on the Golf. As for badge stigma anyone who knows anything about cars knows that the Skodas of today are as far removed from those of yesteryear as you can get, it makes it even funnier when a guy in a golf TDI 130 thinks he can outdrag you and then you see his open mouthed surprise as you effortlessly waft by him on 3/4 throttle! neelyp 313 posts 51 months [report] [news]  Tuesday 30th September 2008 Swoxy said: Don't forget that the vRS comes with leather. No it doesn't, it's a dealer fit option. Skyrat 742 posts 30 months [report] [news]  Tuesday 30th September 2008 I had one for a few days and it's a nice car. It's a much better car to the Mk1 Octy, of which I had the vRS petrol version. The new vRS is a big car, with a mahoosive boot, and despite what has been said above I didn't find it cheap and nasty inside at all.The diesel has silly amounts of torque, IIRC I wheelspinned in 3rd gear once, but like all diesels runs out of puff quite quickly. It's only a matter of driving differently if all you've ever driven before was petrols. The only reason I discounted it is that it's a good bit bigger than the SEAT Leon, and as I'm a single bloke I just didn't need that much car. The Leon FR diesel will be just as impressive I'm sure, and it's better spec'd than the Octy. With regards to interior quality, having driven the latest model Golf when my Passat was in for a service I would say that the quality of the Octavia interior is actually slightly better, in fact I would even go so far as to say that it is as good as the A4's was. jamieboy 5,090 posts 69 months [report] [news]  Tuesday 30th September 2008 JaymzDead said: With regards to interior quality, having driven the latest model Golf when my Passat was in for a service I would say that the quality of the Octavia interior is actually slightly better, in fact I would even go so far as to say that it is as good as the A4's was.Having looked at an A4 the previous weekend, I'd disagree with you. Hmm maybe the A4 did feel a bit more special, I was going to put 'almost as good as' in my original post, the Audi does have the edge on interior quality, but so it should being 7K more expensive (well the comparable s line is anyway). I stand by my comments on the Golf's interior though. The seats are a Marmite thing I happen to think they look quite good, especially if you have the car in race blue or white, but I can imagine they're not for everyone and they'd look shocking if you opted for yellow!
