SEAT Ibiza Mk3
SEAT Córdoba Mk2
Volkswagen Polo Mk IV The first generation Fabia (given the internal type code 6Y) was officially presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1999 and production of this model started in October the same year. The estate version Fabia Combi was introduced in September 2000 at the Paris Motor Show. It was the first model to use the Volkswagen Group's A04 platform, which it shares with the Volkswagen Polo Mk IV and SEAT Ibiza. This car won 2000 What Car? "Car of the Year" in the UK.
The range starts with the 1.0 8v Classic (which is cheaper than Volkswagen's smaller 3-door 1.0 Lupo) to the 1.9 PD TDi vRS.
Part of the Fabia's success is the fact that all of its mechanical parts are developed by or in conjunction with Volkswagen, but are offered in a package that is priced to undercut other models in the Volkswagen Group. The only trace of non-VW Å koda left in the Fabia is the 1.0 and 1.4 8v "MPI" engines, which was a modification to Å koda's own 1.3 engine, and was used in pre-Volkswagen Å kodas such as the Estelle and Favorit.
In 2005 the Fabia received a facelift, with changed front fog lights and grille, slightly different rear lights, new steering wheel and revised specification levels. The vRS also had its final gearbox ratio changed. Most importantly the Sport model was added, with the 75 PS (55 kW) 1.4 petrol being offered with a manual transmission. This engine was quickly dropped for the 1.2 HTP, which was not as powerful but is a much more free revving engine giving a more sporty feel, the sport also had its specification changed to include red seat belts and sunset privacy glass from the B pillar to the rear.
Again in 2006 the Fabia range shown at the Geneva Motor Show had minor specification revisions. These include a center rear head rest, a central three-point seatbelt and an additional four bodywork colours. The 1.4 16v 75 PS (55 kW) petrol engine was replaced with a more powerful 1.4 16v 80 PS (59 kW) engine.
[edit] 6Y engines
The term MPI (Multi-Point Injection) is used by Å koda to differentiate from 16v models and (in the case of the Octavia Mk2) FSI engines. The 75 PS (55 kW) version of the 1.4 16v was only mated to Volkswagen's four-speed automatic transmission with fuzzy logic operation until the addition of earlier Sport models which mated it with a manual transmission. The 1.4 8v was dropped in 2003 as it will fail to meet future emissions requirements. Its performance is heavily hampered by its old OHV (Pushrod) design. The Fabia's overall performance and fuel consumption figures fall behind other city cars and small family cars as it is larger and heavier. However, the 1.2 HTP (High Torque Performance) Engine was developed specifically for the Fabia and offers better performance and fuel economy, but later used in Volkswagen's own Polo due to its high acclaim. At launch, the Fabia was available in three trim levels: Classic, Comfort, and Elegance. Later in the Fabia's life the mid-range Comfort Model was dropped for the name Ambiente to fit in with the rest of the range. Other models available throughout the car's lifespan included Ambiente SE, Blackline, Silverline, Sport, Bohemia (Estate only, run-out model) and vRS. Various safety features and minor changes were made over time. Easy and Junior models are sold in Eastern European markets where budgets are lower. Some of these Fabias do not even have painted bumpers or gloveboxes. Also sold in such markets is the Fabia Praktik, which is a panel van version of the Fabia with the rear windows and seats removed. A lesser powered version of the 1.4 MPI with just 60 PS (44 kW) is also sold in Eastern Europe.
[edit] Fabia vRS
Introduced in 2003, the Fabia vRS, while not the first diesel hot hatch, was the first exclusively diesel hot hatch, having no petrol equivalent. The engine is Volkswagen Group's 1.9 litre Pumpe-Düse Turbocharged Direct Injection diesel engine, producing 130 metric horsepower (96 kW) and 310 N·m (230 lb·ft) at 1900 rpm, with a six speed manual gearbox. It was named the "Diesel Car of the Year 2003" in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards. It also falls in a low tax band (Band C) in the UK, further increasing its cost benefits over its (chiefly petrol-powered) counterparts.
Official figures state 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 9.6 seconds, but several motoring magazines and websites have measured faster times (around the 7.0-7.5 seconds range) (Autocar: 7.1 seconds,[3] Auto Express: 8.1 seconds,[4] and FastHatchbacks.com: 8.5 seconds[5]). The in gear acceleration times are 50-70 mph in 5.6 seconds, quicker than BMW's 330i which takes 6.0 seconds. 20-40 mph in 2.4 seconds is as quick as the Lotus Elise 111R. Despite this the Fabia vRS can achieve better than 6.2 L/100 km (46 mpg-imp; 38 mpg-US). If driven carefully some drivers have experienced MPG rates of 65-70 mpg over long periods. The Fabia VRS has a top speed of approximately 130 mph (210 km/h).
The vRS was shown to be quicker than a similarly priced MINI Cooper around Top Gear's and Fifth Gear's test tracks.
In 2007 1,000 Special Edition Fabia vRS models were produced[6] featuring individually numbered black leather seats, sporty red brake callipers, Race Blue metallic paint and a 6 CD autochanger. This model was known as the Fabia vRS SE.
The last Mk1 Fabia vRS came off the production plant in March 2007 - being UK 2007/07 registered. According to Skoda UK, there were only 22 of these 2007 registered marks (not including the 1000 Special Edition vRS SE).

Volkswagen Polo Mk IV The second generation Fabia (internal type code 5J) was officially presented at the Geneva Auto Show in March 2007[7] and was sold from April 2007. It still uses the PQ24 platform.[8][9][10] The car is however slightly larger than its predecessor and takes styling cues from the new Roomster leisure activity vehicle.[11]
For the launch of the new Fabia, Å koda UK commissioned an advertising campaign called Cake, featuring the making of a Å koda Fabia car out of cake which swapped rivets for raisins, metal for marzipan and spark plugs for sugar.[12]
Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive introduces the new Fabia to the public at the 2008 Guangzhou Motor Show. And it sells as 2009 model year in China.
The estate variant[13][14] was officially announced[15] in August 2007 and was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007.[16] Compared with the first generation the new Combi is 7 mm (0.3 in) longer, 46 mm (1.8 in) higher and the boot has grown by 54 litres (to 480 litres total). The engine portfolio is the same as the hatchback version, without the 1.2 44 kW one.
[edit] Skoda India
Skoda India launched the latest version of Fabia in 2007. The car however couldn't live up to the hype created by the previous generation Octavia. Fabia has not succeeded in this market due to dealer problems, steep prices and Skoda trying to position itself as a luxury marque.
Skoda has decided to bring in more powerful engines at better prices and taken strict measures to curb dealer quality levels primarily the service costs.
[edit] 5J engines
The initial petrol engine lineup was a mixture of newer engines from the Volkswagen Group and some carry overs from the outgoing model. The base 1.2 remains the same (44 kW) while the higher powered version has its power output upped to 70 PS (51 kW). There was only a single 1.4 litre 16v petrol on this model, producing 85 PS (63 kW). The range topping petrol engine was the 1.6 16v engine producing 105 PS (77 kW) . There was also an option to link this engine to a 6 speed tiptronic transmission sourced from Aisin.
Diesel engines consisted of the same 70 PS (51 kW) and 80 PS (59 kW) 1.4 TDI units from before. The range topping diesel was a 1.9 TDI producing 105 PS (77 kW).
As of 2010 the engine lineup was updated along with a facelift; this was introduced at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Turbocharged petrol engines are now available for lower fuel consumption. The diesel engines now feature the common rail system and 4-valve technology.
The top-of-the-line VRS model features the same engine as in the Volkswagen Polo Mk5 GTI, producing 180 PS (132 kW). A 7-speed DSG transmission is standard in the RS model and optional for the 77 kW (105 PS; 103 hp) 1.2 TSI. And it has its own version of the Cake advert, with a rock/metal cover of 'My Favorite Things'. Model

The second generation Fabia trim levels are Classic, Ambiente, Sport and Elegance. In the UK the trim levels are 1, 2, Sport, 3, and Greenline. In India, the trim levels are Active, Classic, Ambiente and Elegance. All models sold within the EU are equipped with front passenger, driver and side airbags. Curtain airbags are available as an option. All models are fitted with a central locking system that automatically locks itself if the keys are not in the ignition and the bonnet gets closed. This is a built-in safety measure to stop people hot-wiring the car then driving off. Also to stop people breaking in if the car was locked by the keys only the keys can open it again meaning no one can break the window and open it from the inside if it was locked by the owner.

(1.4 diesel) Roomster Scout crossover The Škoda Roomster (Typ 5J)[1] is a five-door five-seat multi-purpose vehicle-styled leisure activity vehicle, produced by the Czech automaker Škoda Auto. It was a revealed as a production model in March 2006 at the Geneva Auto Show,[2] with sales starting in June 2006. It is built at the Škoda factory in Kvasiny, Rychnov nad Kněžnou District.[1]
A two-door two-seat panel van version is sold as the Å koda Praktik from March 2007.[1]
The Roomster is Å koda's first car since the Volkswagen Group's take over of the brand that is not based entirely on an existing Volkswagen Group platform - although it is fundamentally based on the A4 (PQ34) platform, but with some unique additions.[1] It shares components with the previous Å koda Octavia[2] and the current Å koda Fabia. The name is reportedly a conscious combination of the words 'Room' and 'Roadster', and the split personality theme is played out in the design with a carefully honed 'driving room' ahead of the B-pillars, and a generous 'living room' to the rear. The Roomster therefore competes both in the mini MPV and leisure activity vehicle markets, which it will be sharing with the Fiat Idea, Nissan Note, Opel Meriva, Citroen C3 Picasso and Volkswagen Golf Plus.
The Roomster has also appeared on an episode of Top Gear.[3] Contents 1 Prototype

The Roomster is based on the concept car of the same name, originally revealed in September 2003 at the Frankfurt Auto Show. The concept was slightly shorter - 4,055 millimetres (159.6 in) against 4,205 mm (165.6 in) - than the production model but has a longer wheelbase - 2,710 mm (106.7 in) against 2,617 mm (103.0 in), and featured a single rear sliding door on the passenger side, which was replaced by two conventionally hinged swinging rear doors.
[edit] Cabin
Škoda conceived the Roomster's cabin in a way it can have different configurations at the choice of the user. The rear 'VarioFlex' seat arrangement,[2] which are taller than the front seats, can be folded in a 40-20-40 split configuration, instead of the more usual 40-60, and can also be moved longitudinally and transversally (by removing the middle seat). The rear seats also have variable inclination up to 7° to the back, or completely to the front.
The luggage compartment can have a completely flat surface with the rear seats completely removed, and the surface's height can also be modified with an amplitude of 250 millimetres (9.8 in). With the rear seats removed, the Roomster's luggage compartment has enough room to carry a bicycle.[citation needed]
[edit] Powertrain
The Å koda Roomster takes its internal combustion engines from its Volkswagen Group relatives.[1] Petrol engines include the multi-valve inline three cylinder 1.2 litre, with power initially DIN-rated at 47 kilowatts (64 PS; 63 bhp), but now rated at 51 kilowatts (69 PS; 68 bhp), followed by the 1.4 litre and 1.6 litre inline four cylinder EA111 engines, with power of 63 kilowatts (86 PS; 84 bhp) and 77 kilowatts (105 PS; 103 bhp) respectively.[1] The 1.6 litre is also available with a six-speed tiptronic automatic transmission, and is available on the most luxurious models.
Diesel engine propulsion comes from the inline three cylinder 1.4 Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI), with two power levels, base at 51 kilowatts (69 PS; 68 bhp) and "sport" at 59 kilowatts (80 PS; 79 bhp). The most luxurious models get a four-cylinder 1.9 TDI, with 77 kilowatts (105 PS; 103 bhp).[1] This section requires expansion with:

03/10 [edit] Safety
The Å koda Roomster was rated in 2006 under the Euro NCAP car safety test programme as follows:[5] Adult occupant = Child occupant = Pedestrian = Å koda Praktik [edit] Praktik panel van
The Å koda Praktik (Typ 5J8)[1] is a two-door two-seat panel van version of the Roomster. Its cargo space is 1,605 millimetres (63.2 in) long, 1,016 millimetres (40.0 in) wide (minimum), and 900 millimetres (35.4 in) in height - giving a cargo load space of 1,900 litres (67.1 cu ft), and a payload from 550 to 640 kilograms (1,213 to 1,411 lb). It also includes a moveable internal load bulkead, 'hidden' underfloor storage, anti-slip load bay floor covering with six lashing points, and full-length roof rails.

Jonathan Crouch reports. SKODA ROOMSTER 1.2 12V HTP NEW CAR ROAD TEST If you were to be told that Skoda had built a van-based mini MPV, you'd expect it to be good value. And their Roomster is, assuming you take the time to appreciate all its virtues. The fact remains however, that all the models available price at around the £12,000 mark. All except one: the three cylinder 1.2-litre 12-valve entry-level variant we're looking at here. I always think that experiencing an entry-level variant is the best way to fully understand any fresh design - and the Roomster's concept is certainly fresh. Sure, we've had van-based mini-MPVs for years - cars like Citroen's Berlingo Multispace and Renault's Kangoo - but these were, and are, vans with windows and seats: no more, no less. The Roomster, in contrast, takes a van's simplicity and a car's more passenger-orientated design and blends the best of both into an affordable package. Particularly affordable in the case of the 1.2-litre model listed here. This the first Skoda of the modern era not to be based on a Volkswagen platform. Every other model in the Czech company's range sits on either Volkswagen Golf or Passat underpinnings. The reason that's important is that free of Wolfsburg model shackles, the Skoda designers have been able to create something that's genuinely different: and from the average family's point of view, genuinely useful. For example, the clever folding chairs of this five-seater design allow you to make the most of its sizeable cabin space. The area inside is divided into a separate 'driving environment' for the front two occupants and a separate 'living room' area for the passengers. The driving position is comfortable, with a good degree of adjustment and much less upright than in most MPV products. Quality materials have also been used and build quality is excellent. As you progress rearward, you enter the Roomster's 'Living Room' and it's here that the vehicle's van-like silhouette pays dividends. The roofline steps up, allowing the rear seats to be mounted 46mm higher than those in the front: this boosts the space available to passengers. Leg and headroom are both extremely generous and there's a light, airy feel to the space thanks to the large windows. Skoda's pre-design research pointed out that children become bored more quickly if they don't have a good view of the scenery. "If you've a budget of around £11,000 for an economical van-based compact MPV, then the Skoda Roomster has to be on your shopping list: simple as that..." The rear seating has also been thoughtfully designed. All three sections of the rear bench are individually foldable and removable. They also recline as well as sliding fore and aft so that owners can choose either to maximise passenger legroom or to bump up capacity in the extremely generous boot behind. This boot is accessed through a large tailgate which lifts to reveal a capacity of 450 litres. Then, depending on the position of the rear seats, owners have the option of increasing that cargo space right up to a truly van-like 1,780 litres - which is achieved when all three seats are positioned in the garage at home. All this helps to open up a wide range of potential interior configurations for the Roomster - a real strength when it comes to meeting the varying needs of modern families. And that engine? Well this part of the car is shared with Volkswagen products, being the 70bhp 1.2-litre 12-valve petrol unit found in the Polo. You wouldn't expect it to be very fast and it isn't: still, rest to sixty in around 15 seconds on the way to a top speed of around 100mph should be more than ample for the needs of most potential users. More relevant will be an average fuel consumption figure that should regularly see the right side of 45mpg.There's no doubt that, with its composed handling and clever interior, the Roomster 1.2-litre is a far more sophisticated proposition than your typical van-based MPV. Only base Roomster 1 specification is being offered with this engine but this should supply most of the basic items that families are looking for. There's an MP3-compatible CD stereo, ABS brakes, central door locking, an immobiliser, rear fog lights, electric front windows driver and passenger airbags, curtain airbags and tinted glass. The only notable feature missing is air conditioning, something I'd tick the options box for given all that glass area. To go with its car-like driving position, the Roomster also delivers impressively car-like handling. Despite the high roofline at the rear, it resists body roll admirably and the general ride quality is far superior to van-based MPV rivals. It stays nice and quiet when you're on the move as well, with only limited wind and road noise finding its way inside. The Roomster 1.2-litre feels nimble around town, the 10.5 metre turning circle making it easy to jink a quick three-point turn if you take a wrong steer. It's also fairly easy to park. Visibility out of the car is excellent and it's a mere 235mm longer than Skoda's Fabia supermini. Despite this, it makes a lot of the space inside. All models have the VarioFlex rear seating as standard. Even with five passengers on board, there's still up to 530 litres of luggage space - a good deal better than most compact MPVs. Fold the rear seats down and there's a humungous 1,555 litres available. In addition to the removable centre seat, the two outer chairs can also be completely removed. By pulling on a lever, both chairs can be dismounted and lifted out and you needn't worry about displacing a disc either - at just 14kg each they're reassuringly light. With the rear seats stowed in the garage, you've got 1,780 litres of space and its useable space too, the almost vertical side windows making it easy to load bags right up to the roof if necessary. If you've a budget of around £11,000 for an economical van-based compact MPV, then the Skoda Roomster has to be on your shopping list: simple as that. I'd go further: if you're spending around this sum on any runabout that's likely to have to assume family duties, then you should include this car amongst those you'll need to check out. Whether you should go for the 1.2-litre 70bhp version we're looking at here is a harder question to answer when for just £600 more you can get the superior 85bhp 1.2 TSI turbo petrol variant. If that's not possible, then the base 1.2-litre model has plenty going for it. So your friends won't know what it is? Who cares. So some of them might think it looks odd?
