The new model Fabia and Roomster have been facelifted and fitted with new technology designed to further reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The most important innovations include a new engine (1.2 TDI CR /75bhp DPF) with common rail (high-pressure direct injection), stop-start technology, energy recuperation and gear recommendation (on a Maxi DOT display). One of the biggest technological changes in the second-generation GreenLine version is a new three-cylinder turbocharged engine (1.2 TDI CR DPF/55 kW) with a consumption of just 83.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 89g/km for the Fabia Estate GreenLine II, and 67.3mpg and 109g/km for the Roomster GreenLine II. As well as CO2 emissions, other contaminant levels have also been reduced. The new engine complies with the EU 5 emission standard that, for diesel engines, has stricter regulations for nitrogen oxides and solid particles. The gear ratios of the car's five-speed transmission are identical to those of the ordinary Fabia and Roomster models fitted with the same engine. As a result, the GreenLine II offers the same responsiveness yet lower consumption. The key benefits of the stop-start system stand out in busy city traffic. The system operates automatically, directly after the engine starts. If, after some time, the driver stops the vehicle, engages neutral and releases the clutch pedal, the engine switches off automatically. As soon as the driver presses the clutch, the engine starts again immediately. Stop-start makes it possible to save up to 4.2mpg (combined) or up to 7.7mpg in city traffic. Energy recuperation is another state-of-the-art technology introduced on the new Fabia Estate GreenLine II and Roomster GreenLine II. Effective utilisation of the vehicle's kinetic energy for battery recharging is a simple system that helps to save fuel continuously. The two systems – stop-start and braking energy recovery, work in partnership and, along with other measures, help to make the operation of these new models as environmentally-friendly as possible. The application of the energy recovery system has helped to reduce the CO2 emissions by 2-4 g/km. Other technologies Škoda is introducing on the GreenLine II models to improve economy are the gear recommendation system, which helps the driver make optimum use of the engine's potential, a lowered and aerodynamically-covered chassis and, last but not least, low-rolling-resistance tyres. Skoda has announced that they’re sticking a new generation of GreenLine engines in across their range and adding GreenLine versions of the Yeti and Superb Estate, so you can be frugal whatever Skoda model you opt for. Every single GreenLine model gets a tweak to squeeze more from every gallon. The newly ‘greened’ Yeti gets the all new 103bhp 1.6 litre diesel with stop/start and brake energy recuperation, as does the Octavia GreenLine and the Superb GreenLine. In the Yeti GreenLine that translates in to 61.4mpg and 119g/km. The Octavia and Superb do better with the same green gubbins and manage 64.2mpg and 114g/km. The little stuff in the Skoda range – the Fabia GreenLine and the Roomster GreenLine – get the same green gubbins attached to the 1.2 litre diesel with 75bhp. So equipped, the Fabia manages 83.1mpg and 89g/km and the Roomster 67.3mpg and 109g/km. All the super-frugal Skodas will be on show on the Skoda stand at Paris from next week together with – we think – the Skoda version of the VW Up! Which will probably make the Skoda stand one of the most economical at Paris. It could be that it’s now more expensive to walk than drive a Skoda GreenLine. The Skoda Fabia Estate and Skoda Roomster now introduce GreenLine II, a second generation of fuel-saving technology.Greenline offers 89g/km and 83mpgIt might seem curious that Skoda has chosen to introduce GreenLine II on the Fabia Estate rather than the Fabia hatchback, but this helps it stand apart from other similar Volkswagen Group products such as the VW Polo BlueMotion and Seat Ibiza Ecomotive. And since the Fabia Estate is still claiming 89g/km CO2, eco-conscious buyers are gaining greater boot space (480-1,460 litres). That emissions rating is also matched by a massive 83.1mpg combined fuel economy, according to official EU testing figures. The Roomster GreenLine II returns an official 67.3mpg while emitting 109g/km CO2 – not bad for such a practical people mover. Roomster GreenLine II returns an official 67.3mpg Skoda unveils new 1.2 TDI turbodieselIn order to achieve this impressive fuel efficiency, Skoda has employed stop-start technology and a new 1.2-litre TDI turbodiesel engine. The new 1.2 is a three-cylinder unit with high-pressure common rail injection producing 75bhp. Available in other Skoda Fabia and Roomster models, the key difference here comes with stop-start and brake energy recuperation.Stop-start switches the engine off at idle, in order to save fuel in urban environments or during congestion – restarting it automatically as soon as the clutch is depressed. Energy recuperation takes the kinetic energy otherwise lost under braking and uses it to charge the electric systems.Skoda claims a 4.2mpg improvement with stop-start overall and up to 7.7mpg in city driving, while recuperation saves 2-4g/km CO2.Responsive driving experienceUsing these systems means the Fabia Estate and Roomster GreenLine II models achieve efficiency gains with the same gear ratios as other models with this engine – saving costs and maintaining the same responsive driving experience. However, in addition GreenLine II also features a ‘gear recommendation system’, which helps you pick the most efficient gear at all times, lowered suspension for better aerodynamics, and low rolling resistance tyres.Pricing and performance details are not yet available, but we do know that both the Skoda Fabia Estate GreenLine II and Skoda Roomster GreenLine II go on sale later this year.  Which? Car email To be kept in the loop on all the manufacturer offers and great car deals we spot each week, sign up for our Which? In the new Yeti Greenline this engine emits 119g/km of CO2 while average claimed fuel economy is 61.4mpg, yet it still promises decent performance with a 0-62mph time of 12.1 seconds. In the Superb range the Greenline model has only been available in the saloon untll now, but Skoda is adding the long awaited Superb Estate Greenline to the range. Like the saloon, the estate emits 114g/km of CO2 and returns a claimed 64.2mpg. Meanwhile the Skoda Octavia Greeline, available as both a hatchback and estate, sees emissions lowered from 114g/km (in the hatch) to 99g/km of CO2, meaning zero annual VED while claimed economy improves to 74.3mpg (from 64.2mpg). The estate is cleaner too, emitting 109g/km and averaging a claimed 67.3mpg. There are also updates for the Fabia and Roomster Greenline models which are now powered by a new 75bhp 1.2 TDI common-rail diesel engine which, like the 1.6 TDI, is equipped with a particle filter. Thanks to its efficient design, the engine helps the Fabia to emit just 89g/km of CO2 with a staggering claimed fuel consumption of 83.1mpg. The Roomster emits 109g/km and has a claimed 67.3mpg.
