"Once on the move, the oil-burner's torque really pays off..." What is it? Skoda’s acclaimed Octavia underwent a facelift at the start of 2009. And this is the hot vRS version, complete with VW Golf-chasing 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine and six-speed DSG gearbox. At 170hp the engine produces 22% more power than the standard 2.0-litre diesel Octavia and a hefty 350Nm of torque. A 200hp petrol version is also available, but at 280Nm it is well outgunned in the torque stakes by the diesel. What does it look like? The vRS comes with a lowered ride, body kit, special sports interior and lots of gear as standard. All vRS Octavias get deeper front and rear diffusers and a new bootlid spoiler. Combined with the Octavia’s shapely new headlights and deeper grille, red callipers, 18-inch alloys, twin chrome pipes and more spirited lines than its angular predecessor, the body kit gives the vRS a proper hot hatch look. The LED daytime running lights sit low in the front bumper and give an impression of quality that’s expected of modern Skodas too.
One slightly iffy touch is the “Octavia” wording embossed in the headlights. Beyond casting a Bat-signal style logo across oncoming traffic this kind of frippery doesn’t quite project the class you’d expect from a Volkswagen Group product. What’s it like inside? The interior of the vRS is a pleasant place to be. The new touch-screen LCD control panel is straightforward to use and has Skoda-green accents to keep everything co-ordinated, and the six-CD changer has been moved from the boot to the cockpit to save rain-sodden disc changes.
Space-wise there’s lots of headroom, and legroom in the back is reasonable. The boot is enormous. At 560 litres it puts even the Golf Plus’s 395 litres to shame. The only niggle is the special vRS seats. They look sporty in black with light grey faux-suede, but are on the hard side, and the central mesh sections are almost too grippy. What’s it like to drive? As it’s 12mm lower than the standard Octavia, the vRS has quite a firm ride, so around town you’ll feel the humps and hollows more than your latte grande might like. Once you’ve replaced your urbanite tipple with three cans of red bull and want to get aggressive in the open, the setup comes into its own. The uprated brakes provide plenty of stop on demand and are user-friendly once you’ve got over the initial grabbyness typical of just about all VW Group cars. The less-than-snappy 8.4 second 0-62mph stat isn’t that relevant – what the 2.0-litre diesel provides is mid-range punch in abundance. Once on the move, the oil-burner’s torque really pays off and provides painless overtaking.
However, the six-speed DSG struggles to handle the torque at lower speeds, and seems to take much longer than the claimed 0.04 seconds to swap cogs on the way up the ratios (though it is much swifter on the way back down). Torque steer is strong when accelerating hard in first and second, and when the ESP kicks in it delays the up-shift further and the engine over-revs. With few revs to play with in the first place this becomes a problem. Setting the gear lever to sports automatic provides much more controlled (and ultimately quicker) progress up to speed. Verdict While the petrol vRS would be more tuneful and better matched to the DSG paddles, the diesel version provides bags of zip when it’s needed most, and with a combined cycle economy figure of 49.6mpg and emitting 159g/km of CO2 it can be frugal as well as fiery. At £20,165 on the road the vRS is £3580 cheaper than the comparable Golf GTD, and now the Octavia’s styling is mostly up to scratch it makes an awful lot of sense. Available from November 2010, prices start at £21,705 for the Octavia Estate 4x4 while the Superb hatch costs from £22,935. The advanced four-wheel drive system is designed to tackle those challenging conditions that would leave two-wheel drive competitors stranded. Power distribution is controlled electronically by a fourth-generation Haldex clutch. Under normal traction conditions, 96 per cent of the total power is directed to the front axle. In adverse weather conditions - similar to those experienced in the UK last winter - the Haldex system reacts in a split second to redirect power to those wheels with better traction, greatly increasing driving safety. The 4x4′s capabilities aren't limited to wintery conditions. In summer months the 4x4 technology will ensure that towing caravans and trailers is easier and safer, and because drive to the rear wheels is disengaged when not required, there's little adverse effect on fuel consumption. 6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: Car Group Tests Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI CR Elegance DSG Clever saloon is an established success. Can it fight off new rival? July 2010 Few cars have won as many plaudits from the Auto Express team as the Skoda Superb. It beat big names such as the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia to claim the large family car crown at our 2009 New Car Awards, and saw off 43 other hopefuls to land our Family Car World Cup earlier this year. But while you wouldn’t back against the big Czech, the Saab does steal a march on its rival in terms of styling. The Skoda’s imposing nose and elongated body is let down by an awkward rear end, which is compromised by the TwinDoor boot. We actually prefer the look of the sharper Estate. Elegance spec does make the most of the styling, though, with chrome exterior trim and a set of attractive alloys. The Skoda isn’t as visually appealing as its rival inside, either; while the Saab has a swooping, sporty design, the Superb is full of conservative, straight lines. Impeccable build quality and top-grade plastics give it a higher-quality feel, though. And the Elegance will leave 9-5 buyers feeling distinctly short-changed when it comes to kit.Despite its lower price tag, the Superb features sat-nav, full leather upholstery and no fewer than seven airbags as standard. The momentum is maintained further back. The back seats give even more legroom than in the Saab and the 565-litre boot trumps the 515 litres of the 9-5. Fold the rear seats and this liberates an incredible 1,670 litres of load space. Plus, you get that option of opening the bootlid as a hatch. After a sluggish start, the Skoda has edged ahead of the 9-5 – so does it press this advantage home on the road? Armed with the best common-rail diesel and gearbox technology the VW Group has to offer, it leaves its newer rival trailing. Our figures tell only part of the story, because the Superb sprinted from 0-60mph in a fuss-free 8.6 seconds – that’s 1.4 seconds faster than the 9-5. Our in-gear tests were even more revealing. The Skoda’s 3.4-second advantage from 50-70mph in sixth highlights its lower ratios; the Saab got into its stride only at motorway pace.Away from the confines of the test track, the Superb underlines its superiority with a more polished dynamic performance, too. On undulating roads where the Saab floats and bounces, the Skoda retains its composure. Its confidence-inspiring chassis delivers precise steering and a compliant ride, leaving its poor braking performance the only black mark. The DSG gearbox is smoother and faster to respond than the conventional auto of its rival, and the Skoda’s more controlled suspension also provides better ride comfort. All of which leaves the Saab fighting an uphill battle for honours. In detail* Price: £24,875* Engine: 2.0-litre 4cyl in-line* Power: 168bhp* 0-60mph: 8.6 seconds* AE economy: 37.9mpg* Claimed CO2: 159g/km BACK TO TOP What Next COMPARE CAR LOANS COMPARE CAR INSURANCE For more breaking car news and reviews, subscribe to Auto Express magazine. Everybody knows that VW quality is better than Mercedes, and Skodas are some of the best constructed cars in the whole VAG stable. There is always the question of price wisely included in your results, so the Passat and Skoda were bound to come first - Mercs are grossly overpriced and disappointing in real quality terms. I really want SAAB to do well, but until they can lose their GM underpinnings, they are going to struggle. Let's hope they can cling on that long. Cars like the Skoda Favorit, Garde and Rapide of the 80s and 90s were poorly designed with medieval handling, but total sales of over 680,000 cars in 2009 tell the tale of a very different company. Even when taken over by Volkswagen in the early nineties, it took the Czech carmaker a few more years to reach success but here, now, in 2010, Skoda has won awards in everything from build quality to reliability. 2009 saw the Octavia scoop the JD Power Customer Satisfaction Survey’s ‘Best family Car’ based on a roomy cabin, brilliant interior finish and cheap running costs and for this year a face-lifted appearance changes nothing. The VRS badge is a surprising thing, managing to turn heads on the street even though the Octavia has a relatively tame exterior. To those not in the know, the VRS estate could be any other load-lugger with a bit of mid-life crisis bling, but to those who are, a strong VW and Audi engineering influence is enough to provoke a second glance. The Skoda is not quite in the same league as ‘M’ BMWs or ‘RS’ Audis, but packs more than enough punch to bring a smile to face of even the most hardened image-conscious.What is it like on the Road? With 2.0 litre turbo diesel units from VW and Audi already having plenty of get up and go, the prospect of a higher spec turbo charger returning 170bhp in the Octavia is appealing to say the least. Putting the power to the wheels is a 6-speed DSG gear box complete with Ferrari-style paddles with the option of being fully automatic. 350 Nm of torque is felt at its most savage in third gear and gives an exceptionally brisk pull for a car of this weight, not to mention this price. The petrol version is a tad quicker than the diesel on paper, but finding more power low down in the rev range means the diesel performances just as well if not better in everyday situations. For the most efficient start, it is best to engage the paddles as the auto box is left scrabbling around in third gear with traction control blinkers flashing like a page 3 model. The Octavia’s handling on the other hand is nothing short of brilliant, making it feel like a much smaller more agile motor considering the estate’s overall length and 1460kg kerb weight. Having the six gears even in this automatic model is an excellent choice, the car wafts along at motorway speeds, dropping down the cogs quickly and smoothly with a pleasing noise when asked to move along. What is it Like to Own?Performance often means compromising practicality, but not with the Octavia VRS. The boot space is a colossal 580 litres with the seats up, transformed into a simply cavernous 1620 litres with a quick movement of the back seats. Rear leg room is very good no matter how tall the driver of front passenger may be and the driving position is easily manipulated with the use of seat controls. The VRS leather/suede sports seats are impressive, providing great back support and comfort even if not the most tasteful being emblazoned with VRS embroidery.Even with its high-pressure turbo charger and 170bhp the VRS estate still return a healthy 47.1 miles to the gallon - not earth saving efficiency but definitely enough to keep Bill Oddie happy. This mpg is most prominent at the pumps, driving a car capable of 0-60mph in 8 seconds and still managing over 500 miles between refills represents as very complete package from Skoda. Our model was fitted with cruise control, dual climate control, 6-CD player, trip computer, Blue tooth phone capability and advanced stability control; a very long and sometimes expensive options list providing just about every toy conceivable. The diesel VRS’s base price of £21,955 coming with most of the above features as standard is the final reason to get excited about this car.How does it make you feel?Although I wasn’t expecting it, when the time came to give back the Octavia’s keys I have to admit I nearly made up an elaborate story involving a drain and its key. I loved it; there is something about understated engineering success that excites me and the Octavia diesel VRS is a shining example of this. In terms of usability the diesel option is the one to buy, even if it doesn’t pack the power of the petrol. The face lifted model we drove with its 18” alloy wheels, kick plates and VRS bumpers give the Octavia a real presence on the road, but not enough to make it appear fresh out of Halfords. In reality there are faster cars that will impress your friends more, but for the all-round experience of brilliant performance, bags of space, great build quality and impressive fuel economy there isn’t much better for this price. With its daytime LED bulbs and bright red brake callipers the Octavia VRS leaves no room for doubting what it sets out to do, but the fact that it does it with such affordability will leave you feeling more impressed than you would simply by its performance.Final Judgement.Despite problems putting the power down in third gear, this DSG gearbox and turbo charged diesel work very well in unison in a wide range of situations. Overtaking is done with ease and a prod of the go pedal means a quick, smooth gear change without the awkwardness of some competition boxes. To achieve such a blend of practicality and performance is commendable, the awards speak for themselves when sat behind the wheel of this one.Photography by Rory White Export PDFPrintE-mail Back to Top Tell People About Us Login/Register Username or email Password Remember me Forgot login?
