Introduction
The very first Å koda 130 models were introduced in August 1984. Developed from the earlier Å koda 105/120 models (some of which continued in production alongside the Å koda 130 models), the 130 series had a 1289cc engine that produced 58bhp, 5-speed gearbox, semi-trailing arm rear suspension, wider track and four-pot front brake disc calipers (the last two of which were also fitted to the later Å koda 105/120 models).
These new models silenced the earlier criticism that had been made in some quarters of tail-happy handling, with the prominent UK motoring magazine "Autocar and Motor" remarking in 1988 that the new 136 Rapid model "handles like a Porsche 911".
The 130 range consisted of the 130 L and 130 GL saloons and 130 Rapid coupe respectively (these models being equivalent to the 120 LS and 120 GLS saloons and 120 Rapid coupe. For the UK market, the models were available in both 4-door 'Estelle' saloon (130 only) and 2 door Rapid Coupe (both 130 and 136, and ultimately 135 models) and a lot of the new features were the result of Skodas rally programme of the 70s and 80s. An after market cabriolet version was also available. The cars were very competitive on price and helped Skoda to new sales records in Western Europe in the late 1980s. Å koda 130-136 Models
Below is the list of models that were sold at least in Czechoslovakia:
Å koda 130 L (1984-1988)
Å koda 130 GL (1984-1988)
Å koda 130 Rapid (1984-1988)
Å koda 135 L (1988-1990)
Å koda 135 GL (1988-1990)
Å koda 136 L (1987-1990)
Å koda 136 GL (1987-1990)
Å koda 136 Rapid (1987-1990) Conclusion
Importantly historically as the last mass-produced rear-engined family cars made in Europe, the models have become increasingly rare in the UK at the time of writing, with prices for good examples rising, and are now largely in the hands of enthusiasts. All models had an engine capacity of 1289cc with a bore of 75.5 mm and stroke of 72 mm, 136 and 135 models had all-alloy engine construction, and the basic engine design was to carry over to the Felicia and Favorit models of the 1990s. So, how did the Skoda fare?
Skoda had been planning this car for many years trying various designs to come up with a car that would, effectively, be all things to all people. This design, which became available in the UK in 1965, was an imaginative and hopeful design for the future of the factory. The letters MB, incidentally, stand for Mladá Boleslav the location of the factory in the North of the Czech Republic. The Skoda 1000MB
The car was a rear-engined, rear wheel drive model that, I suppose, was a little on the lines of the Renault 8.
The engine was a robust unit designed for hard work with a relatively low compression ratio that was unusual in that it has an aluminium cylinder head onto of a cast iron block.
The body was a four-seater with front seats that folded down to make a bed. The seats also folded different ways to accommodate various luggage and passenger combinations making it a very useful transport for those who did more than carry passengers. In a sense it was foreshadowing the development in cars that was to come over the next few decades.
It also boasted a multitude of what on most cars at the time were optional extras. This was in line with Skoda’s policy to offer as many features as possible in a car that was still inexpensive.
The engine and other mechanicals were also designed for ease of use and low maintenance since it was hoped to sell the car in a variety of countries and many parts of the world. This is similar to the way the VW beetle was designed that I have already reviewed.
One interesting feature was the provision of a radiator blind, something never seen today. This was operated from a lever inside the car and aided the warming up period. However, for the Skoda, it did more than that making it necessary to set the position of the blind consistent with the type of motoring proposed. That is, cruising on a motorway where less heat is generated required a different setting to driving across country.
The car was never intended as a smooth, quiet, top-of-the-range touring car but a workhorse for a variety of different jobs and people. In a sense the car was much more versatile that most of the competition but versatility comes at a price and the performance was adequate, the ride acceptable. However, you got a lot for your money and many units were sold and I am sure there must have been many happy owners. I am sure, too, that for the country dweller or the more practical man the versatility would far outweigh the performance and ride limitations. If you have experience of the Skoda at that time then I would be interested in a comment.
The gearbox was a conventionally four forward and one reverse with synchromesh on all forward gears.
The instrumentation was the usual ribbon speedometer along with fuel and temperature gauges which were positioned in front of the driver and vision was good between the steering wheel.
Fuel consumption was in the high 30s, good for the time and would have been a good selling point although fuel was cheaper and yearly mileages less so it was, perhaps, not the factor it is today.
Performance was very similar to the Morris Minor 1000 while the Vauxhall Viva was about the same but slightly quicker on acceleration. These two cars had been sold in quantity in the UK and were considered good models. They were also comfortable and easy to drive (I fact, I learned to drive in the Vauxhall). To the possible new owner there was little to choose between them on performance but see price below.
All right, I can’t finish this section without mentioning Skoda’s other problems. It seems that this is all behind them now but at the end of the 60s and into the 70s (I think) Skoda did have a reputation for producing unimaginative, unreliable cars. So far as I know, in 1965 that was all in the future but there is not a lot of information available. If you know different then please let me know.
Variations
1966 saw the introduction of the de Luxe version with a better and nicer trim along with another model, the twin carburettor version rated at, I believe, 52bhp.
1968 was the year that the 1100MB appeared with a 1107cc engine running also at around 52bhp. So far as I know there was little difference in performance.
The car sold until 1969 when the range finished to be replaced by the Skoda S100

Price
This, as it is today, was the crucial statistic for most people. The Skoda was £478 14s 0d basic with purchase tax of £101 5s 11d making a total of £579 19s 11d.
Inclusive prices for similar cars in 1965 when the Skoda was introduced are:
Morris Mini-Minor £470
Morris Minor 1000 (4 dr) £547 (perhaps a more comparable version)
Renault 4L £514
Renault 4L Estate £559
Vauxhall Viva £528
Vauxhall Viva De Luxe £579
From this it can be seen that the Skoda was not as cheap as perhaps Skoda may have liked but maybe it was better equipped. If you look at the de luxe versions of the cars above, for example the Viva, then the prices are a little more similar.
A look on the internet revealed the comment from a lot of people that the Skoda were the ‘cheapest car you could buy’. That may have been the case later but the figures above (taken from Motor Magazine July 26, 1965) appear not to bear this out, in 1965 at least.
Overall
Looked at overall, the Skoda was designed for perhaps a different market. In the UK car journeys were short for the most part and over relatively good roads. People tended to carry just passengers and luggage so the flexibility of the Skoda may have been unnecessary.
However, against the competition, it would have seemed a good possibility I think.
Diecast models
I’m afraid that the Skoda, this model at least, is not a popular car and so no diecast models exist on Amazon UK. A look on the internet and Ebay, however, did reveal some nice looking examples of the little car.
Books
For the same reason as the models, there are also no books.
Images
As with most bread-and-butter cars images are not that easy to find but they do exist.
General Links
I’m afraid there are no Skoda clubs that I can find and nothing for this particular model. If you know of a club, or run one then please let me know.
