Steve Walker ReportsOne hundred years ago, the company we now know as Skoda manufactured their first car. It rolled out of the workshop in Bohemia, a region of the central European country we now know as the Czech Republic. Theyve come a long way since then, not least in the last decade or so with the marques transformation in perception from laughing stock to serious player. Today, the old jokes have been largely stricken from the record but there are some aspects of their history that Skoda are only too happy to revisit. Their Bohemian origins, for instance, are currently being evoked by the Fabia Estate Bohemia special edition. Its not a market theyve been particularly keen to directly attack in the past with their spacious supermini-based load-lugger but the hope is that the extra features on the Bohemia will give it the necessary qualifications to compete with the Vauxhall Merivas, Toyota Yaris Versos and Fiat Ideas of this world. To put things in perspective, were actually talking here about a plush version of a small estate car. Its a Fabia Estate with a selection of added features and an eye-catching price tag. The Bohemia is based on the entry-level Fabia Estate Classic but it adds to that cars specification with a set of 15" alloy wheels, roof rails, front fog lights, a leather steering wheel and a leather gear knob. Theres also air-conditioning and a load securing net for the luggage area, along with privacy glass for the windows in the rear, electric power for those in the front and remote central locking. Its a nice collection of equipment and it comes in addition to standard features found on the Classic like a CD player, twin front airbags and power steering. However, to be honest, it hardly transforms the Bohemia into a supermini MPV. This model might be Bohemian by name but Skodas Fabia Estate is hardly bohemian by nature. Classy looking with its elegant, square-cut lines, functional but formulaic in its interior, the Fabia Estate is very much a straight down the line, conventional kinda vehicle. Its a car that gives off-beat styling and quirky innovation a wide berth, preferring to trade on more prosaic virtues. All of which makes Skodas move to thrust the Bohemia special edition version into the small MPV fray seem interesting. The vehicle is more of an alternative to the increasingly popular supermini-MPV breed than a member of that family but for many family-orientated buyers it might just do a better job."Its a car that gives off-beat styling and quirky innovation a wide berth, preferring to trade on more prosaic virtues"Power is supplied courtesy of one of two 1.4-litre powerplants, one petrol and one diesel. By some strange coincidence both engines produce 75bhp but because of the different fuel types they use to do it, the characteristics of each unit are markedly different. The petrol unit offers greater smoothness and refinement than the oil-burner while the diesel majors on economy and a more muscular feel. The Fabia Estate, however, is a substantial vehicle and neither engine can shift the Bohemia with any great alacrity. The petrol requires a lengthy 17-second interval to trouble the 60mph barrier from a standing start and even the diesels 14s time for performing the same feat feels laboured. At lower speeds performance is markedly better in the oil burner, though its 195Nm at 2,200rpm translates into a good punch of acceleration where you need it in urban conditions. The petrol can only manage 126Nm at 4,400rpm but it deploys its power in a more progressive manner without the diesels gruff engine note so some buyers will still prefer it. The diesel Fabia Estates official combined fuel economy figure of 61.4mpg is outstanding, theres no two ways about it, and with 124g/km CO2 emissions, it will prove significantly cheaper to run than the 37.2mpg and 182g/km petrol. All of which brings us onto the prices. Theres little point to a value edition of this kind if it cant command the attention of motorists with a keen eye for a bargain. The Bohemia attempts to do this by offering all the aforementioned extra equipment in addition to the Classic and costing just £710 more. View a Fabia Estate Classic model and it comes across as a fairly Spartan piece of kit and the extras on the Bohemia make it a much more desirable vehicle in comparison. To secure Bohemian motoring, buyers need to find £10,300 for the petrol car and £10,910 for the diesel. The Fabia Estate has little of the cuteness or cleverness that manufacturers attempt to pack their small MPVs with. Where are the cubby holes? Where are the colourful fabrics? Where is the elaborate seating system? What the Fabia Estate does have is space and lots of it. Theres 426 litres of room available in the back and that increases to 1,225 litres with the rear seats folded down. Head and legroom are also good for this class of car - both in the front and in the rear. The Fabia handles better than the typical small MPV too, its lower roofline contributing to reduced body-roll and its supermini origins producing agreeably agile direction changes. Its refined and comfortable on longer trips and compact enough to help in urban situations. In fact, the Fabia Estate will be a preferable option for many buyers over true supermini MPVs and thats without the added draw of the Bohemian special edition trim. Skodas Fabia Estate Bohemia is no MPV but in pushing it forward into that area of the market, Skoda are hoping to highlight the ways in which it betters those kinds of vehicles. There are quite a few of them too. The pricing looks very competitive when you consider the Fabia Estates size and the equipment included in the Bohemia, while the driving experience is much more like that of a supermini than an MPV many people will like that. The Bohemia doesnt have the dinky, trendiness of a supermini MPV, it doesnt have the infinitely adjustable seating system and the interior isnt riddled with endearing little features. Its a simple, very well constructed, practical car with classy looks and an attractive price.
